My Role

UX/UI Designer

Project Details

Verve is a school management mobile app concept created to streamline communication between parents and teachers. This verve school management app design was built with a focus on usability, accessibility, and emotional clarity. The name “Verve” reflects the energy and care behind every screen, feature, and user flow.

Parents of younger students often find themselves juggling schedules, paperwork, and constant questions. I wanted this app to act as a central hub, a place where they could get real-time updates, track classroom activity, and message teachers without needing multiple platforms.

The UX design process included persona mapping for three key user groups: parents, teachers, and administrative staff. I prioritized features that could reduce miscommunication while adding peace of mind, like absence alerts and school-wide push notifications.

I used Figma extensively to map out the design system, from wireframes to interactive prototypes. It allowed me to quickly iterate on layouts, refine components, and ensure a consistent experience across different screens and use cases. Each screen was designed to look clean and friendly, with thoughtful touches that made common tasks feel fast and friction-free. Whether it was viewing a daily update or contacting a school nurse, every feature had to earn its place.

Verve is a concept, but it’s built from real problems and grounded in real solutions that parents and teachers need every day.

Pain Points

The development of Verve was deeply influenced by my personal experiences as a parent navigating the school system's communication challenges. I observed firsthand the frustrations many parents face due to inadequate communication from schools, which often results in missed opportunities to support their children's educational journey. For instance, my own experience highlighted the lack of timely updates on important academic matters, such as struggling with specific subjects, which came to light only after proactive inquiries.

  • Parental Frustration: Parents often find themselves chasing down teachers and school administrators for information that should be readily accessible. This leads to a reactive rather than proactive approach to supporting their child's education.
  • Communication Gaps: Critical issues, such as a child's academic difficulties, can go unaddressed for extended periods due to poor communication channels. This delay can hinder parents from providing timely support or interventions.
  • Desire for Transparency: There is a strong desire among parents for a transparent and efficient communication system that keeps them informed about their child's progress, daily activities, and any concerns that arise.
Goals & Challenges

Verve was developed with the primary goal of improving communication between parents and teachers, ensuring both parties are well-informed about the child's school life. The app aims to provide a seamless and intuitive platform for sharing updates, facilitating discussions, and coordinating activities, all centered on the well-being of children. Another significant goal was to create a user-friendly interface that accommodates parents' diverse technological abilities, ensuring that the app is accessible and easy to navigate.

Challenges
  • User Diversity: Catering to a wide range of users with varying levels of comfort with technology, from tech-savvy individuals to those less familiar with digital tools.
  • Data Privacy: Ensuring the secure handling of sensitive information, particularly concerning children's safety and personal data.
  • Integration with School Systems: Designing the app to integrate smoothly with existing school management systems, minimizing additional workload for school staff.
  • Feature Balance: Balancing comprehensive functionality with simplicity, to avoid overwhelming users with too much information or too many features at once.

Design Process

The design process for Verve was rooted in addressing the practical needs of parents and teachers, especially focusing on ease of use and accessibility. The journey began with defining user personas based on personal experiences and informal discussions with other parents, highlighting common frustrations with existing school communication systems. This led to the creation of wireframes in Figma, focusing on a clean, intuitive interface that prioritizes essential features without overwhelming the user.

Key design principles included minimalistic design, straightforward navigation, and accessible language, ensuring that all users, regardless of their technological proficiency, could easily engage with the app.

Key Features Developed

  • Communication Hub: A built-in messaging system allows for seamless communication between parents and teachers, facilitating quick discussions about the child’s progress, concerns, and school events.
  • Bus Tracking: The app includes a real-time bus tracking feature, giving parents peace of mind by showing the exact location of the school bus during pick-up and drop-off times.
  • Event Reminders: Automated reminders help parents keep track of important dates, such as parent-teacher conferences, school events, and deadlines for assignments, ensuring they never miss crucial moments.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Designed with simplicity in mind, Verve's interface is easy to navigate, with clear icons and labels, making it accessible for all users, including those less familiar with technology.
Conclusion & Reflection

Designing Verve was a rewarding experience that highlighted the importance of creating user-centric solutions in educational technology. The development process underscored the need for simplicity, transparency, and reliability in communication tools for parents and teachers. Through this project, I learned the value of combining personal experiences with design principles to address real-world challenges effectively.

Reflecting on the journey, Verve not only aims to streamline communication but also empowers parents to be more engaged in their children's education. The feedback from initial users has been encouraging, particularly praising the app's ease of use and comprehensive features. This project has reinforced my commitment to designing tools that make a meaningful impact on users' lives, and I look forward to continuously refining Verve based on ongoing feedback.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, I am excited about the potential to further develop Verve by teaming up with a skilled coder to bring the design to life. While I have knowledge of coding languages such as JavaScript, I understand my limitations and recognize the value of collaborating with an expert to ensure the highest quality product. This collaboration will ensure that the final product closely aligns with the user-centric vision we've established. There are plans to expand Verve's capabilities, including integrating more detailed academic resources and features for managing extracurricular activities. By working with a coder, I aim to create a robust, responsive, and easily maintainable platform that continues to enhance the educational experience for both parents and teachers. This partnership will also provide valuable insights into the technical aspects of product development, further enriching my skills and understanding of the digital product lifecycle.
